the crazy adventures of S & S...part 1

I'm a sucker for great art...creativity, things that make me cock my head to the side..all that

So, it wasn't too far fetched that S and I went to the Philadelphia Art Museum for a mid-Sunday retreat. Because i studied art history i kind of knew what section i wanted to visit...Modern/Contemporary Art.

Mark Rothko
Pablo Picasso
Jackson Pollock

to name a few..

but the real excitement came from The American Collection! *dun dun dun*

...hesitant as anyone would be...the question in my mind was; What possibly could be in this section that would 1. interest me 2. fascinate me 3. or even remotely thrill me to the point I'd want to blog about it!

I was wrong.

In grammar school, history was taught through the eyes of an Anglo perspective. Christopher Columbus discovered the world..blah blah blah Native Americans..Thanksgiving, Sea to shining sea...you all know what went down..and when you grew up, you "discovered" the truth. BUT! this American section was amazing..not only did they display all of the LIES and DECEPTIONS in art form..BUT, it definitely was believed by other spectators. The view was unfair and biased.

I guess what was seen was the obvious, an American viewpoint of the early world. But, there is no section dedicated to sub cultures that had major influences as well. There is a European section and an Asian section but no African/African American section...or even a Latino section.

How could the Art Museum of Philadelphia not have in-house art rooms comparable of the people that live in the city itself? Showcasing a widespread view of the "early" world...for appreciators to learn the whole truth..not portions...

So, as you could imagine...S & I were shocked..verbally correcting the LIES and DECEPTIONS we saw. But more importantly, what we witnessed is why it's important to learn your own truth..and not just the "truths" told to you.

Needless to say, the art museum trip was educational, uplifting and we're definitely going back...so until next time!

S&S...out!
